St Luke’s Hospice
St Luke’s Hospice isn’t just about buildings, it’s about a special way of caring for people and has been since 1990. Their expert staff understand the impact a life limiting illness and bereavement can have, not only on the person diagnosed but also on their family and friends.
Offering over 20 different services, the Hospice cares for people in Basildon, Thurrock and surrounding areas who have Cancer care needs as well as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease , HIV/Aids and Heart Failure.
Services are provided at the main Hospice, (adjacent to Basildon Hospital), their two satellite centres St. Luke’s House (Corringham) and Dove Cottage, (Billericay), as well as inside patients’ own home through their comprehensive ‘Hospice at Home’ Service.
St Luke’s Hospice’ commitment to care extends beyond their patients, to their family, their children, friends and carers – helping them to cope throughout the patients illness and then in their bereavement.
They also offer Community Counselling services for children, young people and adults. The bereavement does not have to have a direct link to St. Luke’s and can be, for example, be following death due to a road traffic accident, accident at work as well as through illness or diseases such as cancer.
Support is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for which, as a registered charity, St Luke’s Hospice makes no charge. Their aim is to maintain and enhance the quality of life in their community, whilst offering the right to be treated with dignity, sensitivity, compassion and understanding.
How playing the Local Hospice Lottery helps St Luke’s Hospice
St Luke’s commitment to care is only possible because of people like you. Their costs rise day by day and they need your help to enable them to meet the increasing demands made on their services. Although they receive some financial support from their Local Primary Care Trust, the Hospice has to work hard to fundraise and maintain income levels. It costs over £5.5 million a year to run St Luke’s Hospice’s services and they need to raise around £9,000 every single day.
St Luke’s Hospice is one of a number of hospices throughout Great Britain supported by Local Hospice Lottery and Local Hospice Lottery will give between 50% and 80% of profits from individuals playing in support of St Luke’s Hospice to St Luke’s Hospice. This is expected to be at least £1,000,000 over five years from April 2016. For each £1 entry in the weekly draw Local Hospice Lottery gives an average of 60p to hospice care.
